Health & Safety

As the vaccination process expands, health and safety guidance continues to change. We expect this to continue as we move into April.

We will continue to use this weekly update as a way to share pertinent changes. We would ask for your patience as these changes often come rapidly and it takes time to identify their related impact on school and district operations.

Below is a recap of the latest information.

  • Face Covering Guidance: We recognize there have been recent updates to face covering guidance at a state and local level. All staff, students and families are still required to wear face coverings when on school property and in all common areas (hallways, classrooms, bus, main office, cafeteria, etc.), during all transition times (passing periods), and during student arrival and pick-up.

  • Visitor Guidance: Visitor guidance at schools and district buildings will remain the same for the remainder of the current school year. Building access for visitors will continue to be limited to a student in need of medical or social-emotional support, or on an emergency basis.

  • Safety Protocols: Students should continue to follow all established district health and safety protocols.

COVID Testing Options
The district will use state-provided BINAXNow Home Testing Kits as a testing option for symptomatic students. These test kits will be provided to symptomatic students and staff on a school-by-school basis.

Families and staff can also continue to get tested at active COVIDCheck Colorado locations or you can find other free COVID testing locations in the metro area.

Positive News Stories

Five Star Stories

Five Star Students and Staff Make Connections Around the World!
We have great news stories to share from across the district - from our amazing staff to our stand out students!

  • Century Middle School’s counseling staff, 8th-grade teachers and administrators came up with Comet Circles, a creative opportunity for students to connect with each other and build a sense of school community. They even delivered small gift gags to students and staff for participating.

  • The German students at Horizon High School saw their exchange program temporarily canceled this year due to the pandemic, but they still found ways to connect with their German counterparts overseas by using Zoom and collaborating on projects online. They were even featured in a local German newspaper!

  • STEM Lab students built their own lava lamps as part of an exciting science project. The project was challenging and required a lot of independent work, especially due to safety protocols. They supported each other, and every student in the class was successful thanks to their great collaboration.

Family Reminders & Upcoming Events

Building Healthy Communities - Becoming a Trusted Adult for Youth
As we support youth on their journey through development, navigating conversations with them can often feel difficult. Yet, it is critical for youth to have trusted adults that they know will be willing and able to provide support and understanding and answer questions with accurate information.

Join Five Star staff virtually on Thursday, April 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. as we learn how to use trusted adult strategies to have conversations with youth about difficult subjects - everything from cleaning your room to resisting peer pressure. We think you’ll find these strategies helpful, whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, coach, or other trusted adult. Safety Situations — How will parents be notified?

safety types

Schools practice safety procedures throughout the school year, including fire, Secure (formally known as lockOUT) and lockDOWN drills, and are trained annually in how to respond in emergency situations. But schools aren’t the only ones who need to know what to do in an emergency situation. Promoting a safe and secure learning environment is further strengthened and reinforced through a partnership with students, staff, parents and the community.

We encourage families to:
