Design begins on schools scheduled for 2018 improvements
Design work has begun on eight district schools scheduled to receive improvements in 2018 as part of the Adams 12 Five Star Schools 2016 Bond Program.
Mountain View, North Mor, North Star, Stukey, Westview and Woodglen elementary schools are all scheduled to receive important renovation work as well as upgrades to building infrastructure and mechanical systems, and security enhancements.
Design work is also under way on planned expansions to Arapahoe Ridge and Cotton Creek elementary schools. Both of those schools rely on modular classrooms to house students and the new classroom space will allow all students to be back under one roof.
These schools were prioritized to receive bond improvements first in a bond timeline the district developed shortly after successfully passing the bond. Considerations for placement on the timeline included a school’s critical deferred maintenance needs, delivery capacity (the district’s ability to handle multiple bond projects at the same time), cost efficiency, a project’s ability to address overcrowding, district programming needs and balance across school levels and geographic regions within the district.
“The decision of what schools are first in the work cycle is never easy,” said Pat Hamilton, Five Star Schools Chief Operations Officer. “In a perfect world, we could address the needs of all of our schools in the first year, but that's not realistic.”
Hamilton pointed out that the district is able to monitor building deferred maintenance needs through a Facility Condition Index scores. These scores were the basis for facility scorecards that school communities received prior to the passage of the bond in 2016.
“The FCI scores, along with information from our maintenance work order system and several meetings with our maintenance staff, are how we determined which schools would be first,” he added.
The district interviewed and awarded three architectural design teams for the projects earlier this month. A school-appointed Design Advisory Group has been assembled for each project. A Design Advisory Group (DAG) is a group of project stakeholders including the school principal, staff members and parents who help the design team understand the school users’ need and help them to design features that support those needs. These DAG groups began meeting this month, and they will remain involved until the project reaches the the end of the design development phase - which is when work on the final construction drawings begins.
Overall design work for Mountain View, North Mor, North Star, Stukey, Westview and Woodglen is expected to take 12 weeks. Major construction is expected to take place in Summer 2018 and be completed in time for the start of the 2018-19 school year.
For the Arapahoe Ridge and Cotton Creek expansion projects, design work is expected to take about six months with construction slated to start in early 2018. The additions are also expected to be completed by the start of the 2018-19 school year.
These projects are in addition to major construction projects that begin this spring: the construction of a new P-8 school in Broomfield and the first phase of the STEM Lab renovation in Northglenn.
