Veteran's Memorial Aquatics Center (VMAC)
Welcome to the Adams 12 Five Star Schools Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, also known as the VMAC. This is a 765,000-gallon 50-meter Olympic-sized pool which also includes one 3-meter and three 1-meter spring boards and is home to the Five Star District’s boys and girls swimming and diving teams. Groundbreaking on the $19.5 million facility occurred on June 9th, 2009 and it was substantially complete on August 6th, 2010.
This 43,574 square foot facility features a 22,481 square foot natatorium which can house 800 athletes, coaches and meet personnel between the pool and deck area. Spectator seating is located above the natatorium and offers the ideal view for each of the 10 competitive lanes or all 21 practice lanes and diving boards. The VMAC bleacher area boasts seating for approximately 842 spectators which makes this an ideal location for hosting the State Swimming and Diving meet as well as other major competitions.
The VMAC is fully equipped with the latest technology and filtration systems to allow the most efficient usage of water and energy. The pool is operated by:
- BECS System 5 chemical automation unit
- Neptune-Benson’s “Defender Filter”
- 102 solar thermal collectors that work in tandem with the Lochinvar boilers and Ecoflow II Ultra-Violet Light (UV) treatment system.
Chemically, the pool is balanced by:
- Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach)
- Acid Magic (muriatic acid alternative)
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Sodium Bicarbonate and
- Calcium Chloride.
The VMAC also features men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers and lockers, meet management room, unisex restroom, two downstairs lobbies, admissions booth, vending area and upstairs concessions stand, spectator restrooms and a lobby.
Outside the VMAC to the north end of the building you will find the Thornton Veterans Memorial. In the lower level lobby, prior to entering the pool, you will find another veterans memorial which honors Adams 12 Five Star School graduates who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces.
The VMAC is a collaborative effort between the Adams 12 Five Star Schools and the City of Thornton. The City of Thornton donated the land on which the VMAC is located, will care for the surrounding landscaping and has contributed approximately $1.36 million towards the site work, parking, landscaping and irrigation. The VMAC will be operated by the school district and the City of Thornton will utilize some space for programming.
Who Uses the VMAC?
Along with hosting practice and meets for the district swimming and diving teams the VMAC also hosts practice and meets for various user groups that include:
- City of Thornton CARA and Masters
- Front Range Barracudas
- State of Colorado Masters organization (COMSA)
- Rocky Mountain Neptunes
The VMAC welcomes outside user groups to rent space for practice and or meets/events. Although the VMAC is not currently open to the public for activities such as lap swim, swim lessons and clinics, these are ideas currently being researched and we are hopeful to having them in the future.
